'Basic Concepts of Computers' is one of the four written sections of the JKSSB Junior Assistant exam, and it's the most predictable one. Questions are short and factual, drawn from a small pool of concepts — a few hours of focused practice can take it from guesswork to near-full marks.

1. Computer fundamentals & hardware

  • CPU — ALU, control unit, registers
  • Input vs output devices
  • Primary vs secondary memory; RAM is volatile, ROM is non-volatile; cache memory
  • Storage units: 8 bits = 1 byte, 1 KB = 1024 bytes, then MB, GB, TB
  • Generations of computers, system vs application software, binary numbers

2. Operating systems & MS Office

The biggest chunk. Know what an OS does, basic file and folder operations, and these shortcuts:

  • Ctrl+C / V / X — copy, paste, cut · Ctrl+Z undo · Ctrl+Y redo · Ctrl+S save · Ctrl+P print
  • Word: F7 spelling & grammar · F12 Save As
  • Excel: formulas start with =, a cell address is column then row (B4), $A$1 is an absolute reference; SUM, AVERAGE, COUNT
  • PowerPoint: F5 starts the slide show from the beginning

3. Internet & email

  • WWW vs the internet, URLs and domain names, browser vs search engine
  • HTTP / HTTPS; SMTP sends mail, POP3 / IMAP receive it
  • CC vs BCC, attachments, spam
  • Security: phishing, virus, firewall, strong passwords
  • Full forms: LAN, WAN, URL, HTML, ISP
Tip: most computer questions are one-line recall. Do them first in the exam to bank time for the numerical section.
