Computers · 2026-10-15 · 7 min read

In the JKSSB Panchayat Account Assistant paper, Computer Applications carries 30 of 120 marks, as much as General Knowledge and Accountancy. It is also one of the most predictable sections, because questions come from a small set of topics.

Must-remember: 1 byte = 8 bits · 1 KB = 1024 bytes · RAM is volatile · Excel formulas start with = · Word is .docx, Excel .xlsx, PowerPoint .pptx

1. Computer fundamentals

  • CPU: ALU + control unit + registers
  • Memory order (fast to slow): registers → cache → RAM → secondary storage
  • Input: keyboard, mouse, scanner · Output: monitor, printer, plotter
  • Generations: vacuum tubes → transistors → ICs → microprocessors

2. Number systems

Binary uses 0 and 1. To convert 1101 to decimal: 8 + 4 + 0 + 1 = 13. To convert 10 to binary: 8 + 2 = 1010.

3. Shortcuts that get asked

  • Ctrl + C / X / V: copy, cut, paste
  • Ctrl + Z / Y: undo, redo
  • Ctrl + S / P / A: save, print, select all
  • F7: spell check in Word · F5: slideshow in PowerPoint
  • Alt + Tab: switch windows

4. MS Excel

A formula starts with =. Know SUM, AVERAGE, MAX, MIN and COUNT. The intersection of a row and column is a cell, with an address like B3.

5. Internet and security

HTTPS is the secure version of HTTP. Bcc hides a recipient. Phishing tricks people into revealing personal data, and a firewall protects a network from unauthorised access.
