Statistics MCQs for JKSSB Accounts Assistant: Mean, Median, Mode & Probability

Statistics · 2026-10-15 · 7 min read

Statistics carries 10 marks in the Finance Accounts Assistant paper and is part of the Panchayat paper's Mathematics/Statistics section. The questions are formula-based and quick once you know the methods below.

Must-remember: Mean = sum ÷ count · Median = middle value · Mode = most frequent · Mode = 3 × Median − 2 × Mean · P(not A) = 1 − P(A)

Mean, median and mode

  • Mean of 4, 8, 12, 16, 20: 60 ÷ 5 = 12
  • Median of 3, 9, 5, 7, 1: sort to 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, so 5. For an even count, average the two middle values (2, 4, 6, 8 gives 5)
  • Mode of 2, 3, 3, 4, 5, 3, 6: 3

Weighted mean and empirical relation

A student scores 80 in a paper of weight 2 and 60 in a paper of weight 3. Weighted mean = (80×2 + 60×3) ÷ 5 = 68. If mean = 30 and median = 28, then mode = 3 × 28 − 2 × 30 = 24.

Probability

  • Coin: P(head) = 1/2. Two coins, both heads = 1/4
  • Die: P(prime) = 3/6 = 1/2 (2, 3, 5). P(greater than 4) = 2/6 = 1/3
  • Cards: P(ace) = 4/52 = 1/13
  • Independent events: P(A and B) = P(A) × P(B), so 0.3 × 0.4 = 0.12
  • Two dice, sum 7: 6/36 = 1/6

Index numbers and sampling

The base-year index = 100. Laspeyres uses base-year weights, Paasche current-year weights, and Fisher's ideal index is the geometric mean of the two. In sampling, stratified means a sample from each homogeneous group and systematic means every kth item.
