Hydroelectric Power Projects of J&K: River, Location & Capacity (JKSSB Notes)

J&K GK · 2026-10-13 · 7 min read

Hydroelectric projects of J&K are a regular JKSSB general knowledge topic, usually asked as 'on which river is X built?' or 'where is Y located?'. This note groups them by river so the answers stick.

Must-remember: Chenab = Salal, Baglihar, Dul Hasti · Jhelum = Uri-I, Uri-II · Kishanganga = Gurez project · Tawi = Chenani · Suru = Chutak (Kargil)

Projects on the Chenab

  • Salal (Reasi): about 690 MW
  • Baglihar (Ramban): about 900 MW
  • Dul Hasti (Kishtwar): 390 MW, an NHPC project

Projects on the Jhelum and its tributaries

  • Uri-I (Baramulla): 480 MW
  • Uri-II (Baramulla): 240 MW
  • Kishanganga (Bandipora, Gurez): 330 MW, diverting the Kishanganga (Neelum) river

Smaller and older projects

  • Chenani on the Tawi (Udhampur): about 23 MW, commissioned in the 1970s
  • Chutak on the Suru (Kargil): about 44 MW

Projects under development in the Chenab valley

Chenab Valley Power Projects (P) Ltd (CVPP) is a joint venture of NHPC, J&K State Power Development Corporation (JKSPDC) and PTC India. It handles Pakal Dul, Kiru, Kwar and Ratle, all in the Chenab basin.

Indus Waters Treaty link

The Chenab and Jhelum are 'Western rivers' under the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty. India may use them for run-of-river hydropower within the treaty's limits, which is why these projects are mainly run-of-river. The Permanent Indus Commission handles questions on the treaty.

How to remember

  • S-B-D = Chenab (Salal, Baglihar, Dul Hasti)
  • Uri = Jhelum
  • Chenani = Tawi, Chutak = Suru
